about

I am a casual musician and producer. Releasing an album is something I never really expected to happen. Licensing music with label companies is quite complicated. You need patience, talent, and luck (that and contacts). I have always been convinced that I would never stand a chance of getting licensed, so I decided to release this album by myself. In fact, I had been thinking about releasing for a while, and it is only recently that I moved onward with this project, when a few friends of mine told me they found the idea interesting.

I have absolutely no expectations or objectives through this process. If ten copies of that record are sold, I will be very flattered. Not that I am looking down on my work; it is just that it remains unknown and underground, which is ok.

I started producing electronic music in 2007. Since then, I have started many different projects, most of them were tests or experiments, and only a few ended up being a complete piece of work. I had to remix and rearrange the original versions of the oldest songs on the album, for my capacities in mastering were quite inexistent back when I started producing. When I go back in time by listening to my songs, I am always amazed by the progress I have made. I am still far from being even close to a professional level: there are so many subtleties in software, equipment and technique that it makes electronic music production a constant and stimulating learning experience for me.

Working on such a project requires a lot of time. Since the moment I decided to release, it took almost three months to rearrange, remaster and polish the songs on the record. I sometimes wish I had more time to get this album released before, but as a full-time student, I have a lot of work to do apart from producing music.

My project on electronic music production is personal. I spend a lot of time in my room working on songs. It requires a lot of discipline, assiduousness, and sacrifices. I am rather solitary and independent. Even though I like being with friends, there are times where I prefer to stay home instead of going out.
Whatever the party, as soon as I am not having fun, I just leave and get back to music production. I often ended up producing music at 2 a.m. while people were still partying.

My songs rarely have any deeper meaning, but there are still a few interesting facts about some of the ones you can hear on the record.

Drums, Rush and Stairs are the three oldest songs on the record, but I have loved them since they were produced in 2007. I could easily imagine Rush being used in a pursuit scene in an action movie. Stairs is a more obscure minimalist song, and Drums could be seen as a nice interlude.
Chill-Out was produced in December 2009, right after I was done with a difficult semester in college. I just needed to… well… chill-out.

Urban Zone and Takeoff were both produced in 2010 while I was living in Vancouver. They of course have a special meaning for me, as my trip in British-Columbia has been a lifetime experience.

Guitar Loop was a test at first, and it turned out to be nice. It is the only song who contains guitar.

I am particularly proud of A Sound. This song was produced using a single sound that I randomly picked on my software. I generated every other sound in the composition using sampling and effects. It is now impossible to recognize the original sound in the final product.

I wrote The Long Sleep a few days after my grandmother passed away last summer. Both the song and the title are a humble tribute to her.

If you listen to the record from beginning to end, you might notice the sort of progression that was given to it. I wanted to start with more rhythmic electro, then go with some kind of lounge music and conclude with slow, ambient pieces.

Many thanks to Jérôme, the very first person who listened to my compositions, and who has always been there to advise me; Samuel, for his pertinent comments on graphics; all those who believed in me and supported me throughout this process.

I would like to thank you for buying this album and taking the time to listen to it. I sincerely hope you will enjoy it. I have worked on that project for uncountable days, and I am proud of it. If you have any comments, feel free to contact me. It is odd to thank someone with a text, for I neither know who you are, where you are, nor when you bought the record. But whoever you are, wherever you are, whenever you bought that record,

Thank you

Oliver Brad
